Job's story raises the question of the seeming absence of God in undeserved suffering. The Gospel lesson of the rich man who chose not to follow Jesus because he was asked to give away all he has reminds us that Christ's call to us involves radical discipleship. When we choose to suffer or sacrifice voluntarily for the sake of God's kingdom, such as Saint Francis did, we are blessed with a closer relationship to God.
