Workshops

The Public Education and Visitor Services Department offers the following programs for families. For more information and reservations please call (212) 932-7347. All Public Education Family programs meet for registration at the Visitor Center inside the Cathedral entrance, at 112 Street & Amsterdam Avenue.


Kids Cathedral
Thursdays, February 4, 11, 18, 25, 10:30 am – 11:30 am
A series of one-hour programs designed for young ones and their caregivers to explore the shapes, colors and patterns found at the Cathedral. Using hands-on activities, arts and crafts and stories, children observe architecture, stained glass, and art and then create their own pieces to take home. For ages 2-4, with accompanying adult. Space is limited to 10 children per session, and reservations are recommended. $10 per class.

Fantastical Creatures: A Children’s Animal Workshop
Saturday, February 6, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon
Children and their families explore the role of animals, both real and mythological, in both their lives and the Cathedral. In this two-hour workshop, families are invited to make their own animals with clay, mask-making, and sock puppets. Recommended for ages 4 and up. $8 per child, with accompanying adult.

Medieval Arts Children’s Workshop
Saturday, February 20, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon
In this signature two-hour workshop, children carve a block of limestone; create medieval illuminated letters; design gargoyles, weave and more! Recommended for ages 4 and up. $6 per child, with accompanying adult.

Medieval Play: A Games Workshop
Saturday, March 6, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon
What did people do for fun in the Middle Ages? Children will discover where sports can be found in the Cathedral, learn to play games and create toys that were popular in Medieval Europe, as well as create their own heraldic coat of arms. Recommended for ages 4 and up. $8 per child, with accompanying adult.

Easter Eggs: A Family Eggstravaganza
Saturday, March 27, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon & 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Our popular annual egg workshop is back! Children can create colorful patterns on their eggs with tissue paper, glitter, glue, and paint, and build a nest for decorated eggs with twigs, feathers, and clay. Please bring two hard-boiled eggs per child. Recommended for ages 4 and up. $8 per child, with accompanying adult.

Medieval Arts Children’s Workshop
Saturday, April 10, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon
In this signature two-hour workshop, children carve a block of limestone; create medieval illuminated letters; design gargoyles; weave; and more! Recommended for ages 4 and up. $6 per child, with accompanying adult.

Nature in the Cathedral: An Ecological Workshop
Saturday, April 24, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon
Children and their families can celebrate Earth Day and the return of Spring with a special tour of the Cathedral examining plants in glass and stone. They will then head to the workshop to sculpt living plants, create seed superheroes, and illustrate their own book of plants, all the while learning about the basic needs of plants. Recommended for ages 4 and up. $8 per child with accompanying adult.

Kids Cathedral
Thursdays, May 6, 13, 20, 27, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
This is a series of one-hour programs designed for young ones and their caregivers to explore the shapes, colors, and patterns found at the Cathedral. Glowing Glass: A Children’s Stained Glass Workshop
Saturday, May 8, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon
Children and their families explore the shapes, colors, patterns, and stories in the Cathedral’s beautiful stained glass. The program begins with a tour of the Cathedral’s colorful windows, searching for diamonds and flowers, athletes and knights. Children will then make their own stained glass windows by designing patterns in shapes and color, creating picture stories, and discovering the complexity of primary and secondary colors in painting their own Rose Windows. Recommended for ages 4 and up. $8 per child, with accompanying adult.

Medieval Birthday Parties

Saturdays & Sundays, by availability
Celebrate your child's birthday with a two-hour party in the Medieval Arts Workshop, where children sculpt gargoyles, weave, make brass rubbings, carve a block of limestone, and much more!
