West Harlem CSA

(Community Supported Agriculture)

The issue of hunger is addressed through an on- site, congregate meal program that serves predominately homeless men and women, and a community network CSA project that predominantly serves families in the immediate Cathedral community. These programs are staffed by the CCC Food Manager, the Community Organizer and lots of paid and unpaid volunteer staff.

The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is organized by a number of anti-hunger non-profit organizations: Hunger Action Network of New York State, New York City Coalition Against Hunger, Just Food, and the West Harlem Action Network Against Poverty to give local families an opportunity to purchase food shares directly from a mid-size New York State farmer. Families can pay for fresh local food on a week-to-week basis as well as with food stamps. The CSA Group also provides families with information about government and local nutrition programs.  The program also gives the local Emergency Food Pantries/WHANAP members shares to be used in their soup kitchens and food pantries using HPNAP funding (Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program of New York State).
